This file contains job listings for the CS community. Listings may be
posted via MAIL JOBS. Listings posted in the BBOARD file will be moved
here instead (people at other sites often mail to BBOARD since they
don't know about mailing to JOBS). Pages will be deleted from this file
without warning once the deadlines for responding have passed or, if no
such date is included in the job listing, a couple of months after the
mailing date.
The people likely to read this file (via CKSUM or E) are probably
looking for long-term positions; hence short-term jobs such as tutoring
will still be posted in BBOARD (unless this policy is later changed),
and requests for teaching assistants will be posted in either BBOARD or,
more likely, \CSD.
∂24-Apr-80 DON 26-Apr-80 ME know anyone looking for system programming job?
I just got contacted by Ed Catmull of Lucas Film (Star Wars), who had gotten my
name from one of the former SAIL computer-music people who's working for him.
Lucas Film in San Rafael wants to put together a computerised film-making
system, including digital sound processing, computer film editing, etc. They've
got a VAX and a few PERQs (commercially-available Alto-clones) and are looking
for system programmers to help bring it all together. Due to the limited
opportunities for research in the job, I wasn't interested in pursuing it
further myself, but I said I'd spread the word to see who else might feel they
would fit into the position. If you're ready to start work in The Real World
and want to know more about it, or know of someone who might, Ed Catmull can be
called (collect) at 453-9012.
DEW - Surprising to hear they have PERQs since the company that makes them
doesn't even have a prototype that will run any of their code yet.
ROB - I belive Lucas Films PLANS TO get these things, don't have them yet.
ME - They say they'll have 'em in October.
TVR/27-Apr-81: I've actually seen a PERQ there. However, i think this entry is
rather stale. Maybe someone should check to see if they are still hiring.

Systems Programmer
MIT Department of Electrical Engineering
and Computer Science
May, 1980
Job Description: We are looking for a systems programmer for the new
departmental computer facility. This facility, still under
development, comprises a medium-scale timesharing system (a 1MW,
40-terminal DECSYSTEM-20/60) and 5 high-performance personal computers
(MIT-built LISP machines). The systems programmer will work with the
facility manager in a variety of areas as described below, nearly all
of which are related to the DECSYSTEM-20. Note that this job is not
limited to the areas listed, since this is an educational environment
and thus constantly in flux; rather, these areas are mentioned to give
a ``flavor'' of the kinds of tasks that will come up. (These are
listed in approximately decreasing order of importance.)
- Consulting for teaching assistants and students} handling more
difficult system-software-related questions (but not course-related).
- Operation of the system} file system backup, system reload and
shutdown, etc.
- First-level hardware maintenance: identifying obvious problems with
the machinery (especially terminals), logging the problems, dealing
with, and following up with the appropriate maintenance people, etc.
Installing and moving terminals, overseeing the terminal room, etc.
- First-level system software maintenance: handling reported ``bugs''
(problems) in the major software components, viz., TOPS-20 monitor
and executive, EMACS, LISP, and Pascal, by identifying the exact
problem and notifying the appropriate maintainers. (We have all the
appropriate sources for this task.)
Requirements: Following are the general requirements for the job
listed in approximately decreasing importance. These naturally go in
hand with the tasks listed above.
- Flexibility: This job requires a great deal of flexibility, both in
terms of the ability to ``get inside'' software (and some
hardware)--to be able to learn new systems and adapt old systems to
changing requirements--and in terms of working hours--ideally, the
systems programmer would be around from later morning to sometime in
the evening; further, he or she could be called at nearly anytime to
handle system emergencies.
- User-level expertise with major software: fairly intimate knowledge
of the users' side of the TOPS-20 monitor and executive, EMACS, LISP,
and Pascal; for example, ability to add new commands to EMACS or
customize the standard EMACS environment for a course, write LISP
functions to better interface a course's software to the system, etc.
- Operational expertise: ability to deal with TOPS-20 on an
operational level, such as using DUMPER for file backup and restoral,
OPR for Galaxy control, privileged executive commands to shutdown and
bring up the system and deal with recalcitrant devices, etc.
- Familiarity with machine language and TOPS-20 monitor calls:
ability to write user-level systems programs, such as programs that
deal with files at the PMAP and CHFDB level in order to solve
particular problems for a course, programs to generate statistics from
the accounting database, etc.
- Basic hardware familiarity: ability to hook up terminals and modems,
do first-level diagnostics on the DEC-20, identify simple terminal
problems, etc.
If you are interested, please contact Chris Ryland, Department of
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Room 38-374, MIT,
Cambridge, Mass. 02139. (617) 253-5624. (CPR@MC)

A Capsule Description
of the
Knowledge Based Systems Group
in
Bedford, Massachusetts
(a Suburb of Boston/Cambridge)
The Knowledge Based Systems (KNOBS) Group at MITRE now consists
of five research staff and two support personnel, with room for at least
three more researchers. The major applications under current
development are mission planning aids for the Air Force and Navy.
The group is currently using INTERLISP facilities at USC and
BBN, within which a significantly extended translation of MIT's FRL
(Frame Representation Language) has been implemented.
We are developing a system in which the planning process is
represented as the interactive instantiation of a frame or an
inter-related group of frames. The instantiator is template driven,
and employs an innovative control structure to govern the process of
satisfying a set of prioritized constraints, which may invoke FRL
inheritance and/or a backward-chaining inference mechanism using
production rules.
A natural language system is under development
semi-autonomously. The prototype system uses an ATN parser, but more
dictionary-driven methods are now being investigated. While the
present natural language understanding system can be used for
retrieval from the FRL data base and to change the system's production
rules, it is anticipated that English dialog will eventually drive the
entire planning process.
We are looking for people who are interested in developing
innovative systems with broad but well-integrated capabilities. They
should have graduate degrees, preferably in Computer Science, with
experience in artificial intelligence and LISP programming at the
system building level.
Research and publication are encouraged and our work has been
reported at the 1979 IJCAI and 1980 AAAI Conferences.

Dear Gentlepeople;
Does anyone know a top-notch Engineering Type who is
willing to work for serf wages ($ 26,951 (99.2%) to $ 35,033
(0.00001 %)) 200miles from anywhere (if San Diego and Phoenix are
anywhere), actually in the SW corner of the US Army Yuma Proving
Ground, 30 mi. N and E of Yuma, Arizona.
Job openings exist in testing and development departments; but
this search is for a development type who has a flair for writing
proposals for wild ideas, and reports on wild projects.
Naturally the applicant should be familiar with electronics,
optics, mechanical systems, and data transmission and processing.
Desirable knowledge includes climatology, geomorphology,
industrial engineering, Federal procurement procedures, and
psychology (particularly man/machine interactions and small group
behavior). Believe it or not, the applicant will join three
others who meet the above requirements (and love the desert).
{They do not read BBoard regularly, so DOWN}.
If you know of anyone interested, please have her (or
him) call AUTOVON 899-3111, Commercial (collect) 602-328-3111, or
Sndmsg WBrooks or YPG. Ask for Wahner or Bob. (Mail should be
sent to Commander/US Army Yuma Proving Ground/ ATTN: STEYP-MMI
(Brooks)/ Yuma, AZ 85364. Someone will eventually ask for a
Standard Form 171 (Qualifications Statement), so if one is
available, drop a legible copy.
Thanks,

Graphics/Networking Wizard Wanted
The M.I.T. Plasma Fusion Center is looking for an apprentice wizard
to manage the hardware and software maintenance of 4 smaller PDP-11
computer systems which support bit-mapped raster display systems and
network communications over local networks (Chaosnet, Ethernet), the
ARPA network and the Magnetic Fusion Energy network. A B.S.
equivalent in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science is required, as
is PDP-11 assembly-language programming proficiency; networking
(especially Chaosnet and Fusion Energy net) and graphics experience,
as well as some proficiency with Unix and I.T.S. timesharing systems,
are highly desireable but not required. Salary range is $22K to $28K,
depending on qualifications and experience.
This job would allow informal involvement (depending only on your
time constraints) with other laboratories and facilities around the
MIT campus; in particular, the Plasma Fusion Center has close working
relations with the Artificial Intelligence Labs, and is working
informally with the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
department, as well as the Lab for Computer Science, on networking
projects. There is thus a great range of possible exposure to
state-of-the-art facilities, as well as top-notch people, in most
areas of computer science, though it should be emphasized that this
exposure is not part of the job per se, and would be limited mostly by
your interest and time.
